How this calculator works
The calculator sums the area of every segment, adds backsplash area if you include it, then applies the waste percentage for your material to get the area to actually buy. Edge profile is priced separately by linear foot, since it's a separate fabrication step:

Waste is applied to the whole area including backsplash, since backsplash pieces are cut from the same sheet or slab as the counter and carry the same seam and layout constraints.
Worked example
An L-shaped counter: an 8 ft run and a 5 ft run, both 25.5 in deep, in quartz, with a 4 in backsplash:
- Segment 1: 8 ft × 2.125 ft = 17.0 sq ft. Segment 2: 5 ft × 2.125 ft = 10.6 sq ft. Counter area: 27.6 sq ft.
- Finished edge (auto-summed fronts): 8 + 5 = 13 linear ft.
- Backsplash: 13 ft × (4 ÷ 12) ft = 4.3 sq ft, added to area for a total of 32.0 sq ft.
- Quartz waste at 20%: 32.0 × 1.20 ≈ 38.3 sq ft to buy.
- At $65/sq ft material and $18/linear ft edge: 38.3 × $65 + 13 × $18 ≈ $2,724.
A seam fee for the corner join, and a cutout fee for the sink, would both be added by your fabricator on top of this estimate.
Laminate vs stone waste

Busy or bookmatched stone patterns push toward the high end of that range, since the fabricator needs extra slab to line up the veining across a seam. Plain laminate colors sit at the low end.
Measuring your counter
The same formula works for any kitchen or bathroom layout — only the number of segments changes:
- Straight run — one segment: length along the cabinets by standard depth.
- L-shaped — two segments, one per leg of the L.
- U-shaped or island — one segment per straight section; islands are usually their own segment.
- Finished edge — count only the fronts and ends that will actually be visible, not sides against a wall.
How much does a new countertop cost?
Rather than quoting a national average that's stale the day it's published, this calculator prices the job from what you actually enter. In Material + edge mode, give your material price per square foot and edge profile price per linear foot — each is itemized and totaled. In Installed price mode, enter a single installer rate per square foot and the counter area does the rest. Neither mode includes seam fees, cutout fees, plumbing disconnection, or removal of an existing countertop.
Frequently asked questions
Why does stone countertop waste run higher than laminate?
Stone comes as fixed-size slabs cut around natural veining, cracks and seam placement, which typically leaves about 20% offcut. Laminate is manufactured in continuous sheets with far less pattern-matching, so waste is usually closer to 10%.
What counts as a "seam" and does it cost extra?
A seam is a joint where two slab pieces are fused, usually needed on runs longer than one slab or at an L-shaped corner. Fabricators typically charge a flat fee per seam on top of material and edge pricing — add that separately, since it isn't included here.
How is edge profile priced separately from the slab?
Edge profile is priced per linear foot of exposed edge, on top of the per-square-foot slab price, since shaping and polishing the edge is a separate fabrication step. Edges against a wall or appliance aren't finished and aren't counted.
Do I need to account for the sink cutout separately?
No — slabs are cut from a full sheet, so a sink or cooktop cutout doesn't reduce the material you need to buy. Cutouts do typically add a separate fabrication fee, which isn't included in this calculator's material or edge cost.
